Impressions from our guests

"you made us so welcome and nothing was too much trouble- you catered for our every need, ensuring that we experienced all that we wanted to do (with a little help from the weather!) and feeding us with wonderful food and all in such a restful, calming location. Friendship, warmth, food, peace, outdoor fun, creativity and all “green”- what more could we ask!

Everything was a highlight! Walking in the snow through Ancient forest, spotting the signs and tracks of wildlife; crossing the frozen lake in wonderful winter light; the sight of reindeer and the sound of the reindeer bell; standing in the snow in the dark and seeing the Northern Lights; out with the Huskies with the cold needles of snowfall in our faces then warming ourselves round the fire pit in the cabin; the light of the late sunrises on the snow covered trees to be followed so quickly with blazing sunsets; the welcoming lights in the windows of the homes; people that we met both local and other guests; doing Yoga with Maya, Birchcraft with Inga Lill, exploring with Mikael listening to Clinton singing and playing his guitar on the last evening- we did not want to leave…….."

“We had such an amazing time and were sad to leave. Everything about our time was wonderful. I will especially remember the brillant food, the visit to the reindeer herd, skiing (and falling over a lot!), being surrounded by incredible sunlight and seeing hawk owls. The only thing we missed was the aurora but in the end we saw it really well from the train...The second time it was pale greeny blue curtains which filled the sky in front of our cabin window, dancing for about 15 minutes! It was brillant!"

“So many experiences-it's hard to know where to start...The shapes of the trees in the snow, the twisted branches of old pines, the animal and bird tracks (moose, reindeer, hare, fox, otter and more), the sound of the skis on the snow, and the silence when you stand and listen. The daytime light and the milky Northern Lights, overnight in the forest cabin and the sauna, Rolf's Lapland knowledge and his care for us outside and the marvellous hospitality from Mikael and Maya...we have so many memories to treasure"

“For me, the best parts of the holiday were the simple things we did together as a family - making gingerbread in the old bakery, working on a 'snow cave', tobogganing and making the best snow angels ever! The food was also a huge highlight for us - we were constantly delighted by our meals, particularly the feast on Christmas Eve. Vegetarians are particularly well catered for, but meat-eaters shouldn't be put off by that! Delightful, awe-inspiring, heart-melting. Breathtaking scenery and perfect peace. The hosts are friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming without ever being intrusive or making you feel rushed at any time. Christmas was wonderful here and made so much more special by the traditional candles replacing streetlights and the visit to Santa in his cottage. My children (aged 9 and 11) happily suspended any disbelief and didn't ever mention television or sales shopping!”

"The most memorable part of our holiday -The complete rest from clocks, radio and television in the retreat house. All the excursions: to the reindeer farm, the husky sledge rides and learning to use snow shoes. The amazing snow scenery in the 'blueish' daylight. The dedication of Michael and Maya to their vision. The excellent food provided by Damian and the help given by Ann-Sophie. Thanks to Inga-Lill for teaching us bread making and showing us the craft centre. Thank you for allowing us to see the children’s light festival in Church."

“We lost track of time here! The amazing beauty of the midnight sun all night long, cycling on forest roads with just silence around, canoeing through lakes and rivers where we could simply dip our cups and drink - this was a magical ."

“It was the best holiday we have ever had! Maya, Mikael and all the staff at the retreat made us feel welcome and nothing was too much trouble. The food was exceptional, the location beautiful, the house warm, welcoming and beautifully decorated and the local people friendly. Right from the beginning, at the planning stage, Maya was extremely helpful and patient...Mikael was a brilliant host and spent a lot of time with us, making sure that everything was just so.

"The programme of activities was well thought out and offered something different to the packages available on the high street. At no point were we rushed and we had plenty of time to take in everything that was going on. We really felt that our experience was authentic and gave a true taste of the place we were in. All of our stay was wonderful although if I had to select some highlights I would say that the husky tour, seeing the Northern Lights and meeting Santa in his cottage stood out. The latter was magical and really got us into the Christmas spirit.”

”The retreat is certainly up there with our very best memories on this wonderful planet. There were many memorable things. The magical blue winter light; the sled dogs silent run trough a sheer white landscape; happily screaming our hearts out frolicking in the snow on a minus 20 centigrade night after a wonderful traditional sauna.”

"The setting was like living in a Christmas card, the food was delicious, the staff friendly and attentive. The husky sledging was probably our favourite excursion… We had a great time. Mikael and Maya have worked hard to create a great house to stay in and they and the staff work tirelessly to give every single guest a great experience."
Steve S. Dec 2008

"It was all incredible…Driving the dog sleighs in the gently falling snow, with nothing but nature all around was probably tops. But Maya and Mikel are the most fantastic hosts, serving delicious food, giving great hugs, lending warm clothes and generally being superstars. Freshly cooked muffins in the morning, elk soup by a fire, just wish I had been there longer."

”It's hard to say which part was most memorable - watching the Northern Lights dance in the sky as the swans sang on the river, walking in the crisp morning leaves and seeing the mist rise from the lakes, spotting reindeer among the trees... the holiday was filled with wonderful sites and sounds throughout and our hosts helped us make the most of every day…The accommodation, food and activities were at once simple and wonderfully rich, and the area is supremely beautiful. “
